CAREER EXPLORATION AND AVAILABLE OPPORTUNITIES

Below are several opportunities for both transitioning military and veterans. Generally you will find the opportunities that fall into three categories

  1. Employment programs aimed directly at transitioning military and veterans. These usually take the form of specialized recruiting initiative that companies run to source military talent

  2. Career exploration programs. These programs offer veterans a chance to explore and understand the universe of civilian employment opportunities out there

  3. Veteran Internship programs. These programs give transitioning military and veterans the chance to participate in 10 week long internship at leading companies

Hiring Our Heroes

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative launched in March 2011 as a nationwide effort to connect veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses with meaningful employment opportunities.

Working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s vast network of state and local chambers and strategic partners from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, our goal is to create a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day.

American Corporate Partners

American Corporate Partners (ACP) is a national nonprofit organization focused on helping returning veterans and active duty spouses find their next careers through one-on-one mentoring, networking and online career advice.

More than 1 million veterans are expected to transition from the armed forces to civilian life over the next five years.  ACP engages the American people in a unique volunteer opportunity to provide career guidance to returning military as they transition back into civilian life.

We believe that the biggest issue facing our returning service members is not unemployment – it’s underemployment. ACP focuses on helping veterans and active duty spouses find meaningful employment opportunities and develop long-term careers.

fourblock.PNG

Fourblock

Fourblock is a 10 week program partnered with Columbia University targeted at transitioning veterans. Roughly 75% are enlisted graduating from college while 25% are JMOs leaving the service. They lump you in a cohort and each week you attend an evening networking event at a major company with some online training on resumes/interviews. The local program in New York for example holds events at PwC, Deloitte, Google, and JP Morgan. Almost all of their instructors are part-time and actually have careers in major companies so the curriculum is a bit different from what you would get from SFL-TAP. Several of friends with have gotten interviews and offers for Accenture through this program. Folks can also do this in conjunction with a full-time job since the networking events are in the evening. Applying for this is as simple as putting in an application through their website.

Salesforce

This is an initiative by Salesforce to train veterans on the Salesforce platform. There is plenty of work in implementation (especially in cloud) to go around and I'm guessing this program was made to meet that demand. They provide an online self-directed training program, waive virtual classroom instruction fees (typically go $1000+), and waive all certification fees (each cert. costs $200). Once you get your initial Administrator certification (which was pretty easy for me with studying) they guarantee an interview with any of their partner companies listed here. heir partner companies include several major players like Amazon, Deloitte (Federal), Accenture (Federal), Booz Allen Hamilton, and a larger number of smaller firms. I can tell you they take the interview promise seriously because when I got my first certification and applied, I got a call from a recruiter from each of these companies within a week with follow-on interviews scheduled a week later. Bear in mind I have no IT or technical background whatsoever. The pay is competitive with those offered by JMO recruiting firms. The program is also open to military spouses and a lot of the opportunities are remote which can allay the frustration of job-hopping if the family has to PCS. I personally know one enlisted spouse living in South Carolina who landed a remote job as a Salesforce business analyst with a boutique consulting company in Florida.

Goldman Sachs Veterans Integration Program

Launched in 2012, the Goldman Sachs Veterans Integration Program (VIP) provides service men and women exiting the military with an opportunity to develop their professional skills, strengthen their understanding of financial services and prepare for careers in the industry.

The program enables Goldman Sachs to recruit talented troops who are transitioning from the military to the civilian workforce. We encourage those who have completed at least one year of active military service and demonstrate an interest in financial markets to apply.

Outside of their day-to-day responsibilities, participants complete a curriculum including a series of trainings on financial markets and products, networking opportunities and events with Goldman Sachs leaders who share career experiences and insights into the firm’s culture. While in the program, each VIP participant is paired with a peer buddy and a mentor from the Goldman Sachs Veterans Network.

Booz Allen

Booz periodically runs cohorts for professionals and recent grads who want to transition to cyber. I was a federal criminal investigator (1811) for 6 years and came over with a TS/SCI. They definitely are poaching cleared people, but not exclusively. My cohort did Network+, Security+, CySA+, and then I went on to separately do a Splunk certification, and Certified Ethical Hacker. They'll basically pay you to train for 10 weeks, and then either place you with a client or continue paying you to ride the bench while you look for a position.
